My phone continuously fails to apply the latest update. From what I've read that isn't necessarily a bad thing.The bad thing is that last night was the second night it has awoken me from a deep sleep to remind me to retry the failed update. Is there a way to defer updates or at least their notifications?

You can delay the update. Eventually, you will be forced to download and install it. When the download window pops up, I set the download to go in the early morning hours, and turn my phone off at night. I always turn the phone off at night anyway. So far...

One of the better ways to get a clean install with any update is to delete all the apps you downloaded, then turn on any permanent apps that you have turned off. Lastly flush your system cache. After the update, reinstall your old apps one at a time making sure there is nothing going wrong with the phone. If not then install another app, so on and so forth.

My wife and I have been deferring for a few weeks now. The notifications are constant but as long as we dismiss them, it's fine. NG6 just feels like russian roulette 🙂

Deleting downloaded apps, turning some back on, and clearing the cache is not a FDR. Yes I know this shouldn't have to be done for an update, but sometimes you just have to do what is needed to get a better install whether you like it or not. It's what I did with NG6 with my S4 and it worked perfectly. I will do the same thing with Lollipop.

Major system updates like NG6 should not require an FDR. Who wants to spend hours getthing the phone a back where is was? I sure don't. That 's why I haven't installed NG6. I don't know why the manufacturers and service providers think they have to fix things that aren't broken.If you think NG6 was bad, wait until they push Lollipop. Read the posts on the S5 community to see what it did to the users' phones.

I have used this line-up when doing an install and it's always worked for me, only change I make is to wait 1-2 days to let OS & battery settle down.

I am still delaying NG6. I thought that eventually I would be forced to install it, but so far so good on the delaying.

I was able to defer the update for approximately five days. After that, the notifications became constant with the pop up window appearing everytime the phone was woke up. Finally I gave in. Fortunitely, my phone and that of my wifes didn't have any issues with the update. I can only guess that the reason why neither of my phones had issues was because they didn't have allot of applications installed on them at the time that would typically run in the background un-noticed. I did find that some of the default settings of the phone had changed requiring me to go back and restore them to my original wishes. After I modified the new default settings, the phones uses miniscule amounts of battery.

Can someone verify if the update will force itself? As long as I hit the back button to dismiss the notification, it won't update. My only fear is the window popping up and my finger happening to be on that spot where Install Now is,

I understand what you describe is not an FDR, but it still takes a lot of time to restore the phone to its prior state. In any event, I'm through with Samsung phones and all their bloatware. I'm going to try the Droid Turbo with my next upgrade. I would be more excited about the S6 if it had a removable battery and would take an SD card.
